SMART GOALS

What are SMART goals?

SMART goals are statements that turn your intentions into actionable plans.

The word SMART in SMART goals is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Before creating SMART goals, you must first understand each of the letters in the acronym SMART.

  •  SPECIFIC

  • MEASURABLE

  • ACHIEVABLE

  • RELEVANT

  • TIMEBOUND

  • Specific: If your goal is not clear and precise, your efforts won’t be either. To be specific, a goal should be written with no wiggle room when asking who, what, when, where, or why. For instance, instead of having a goal like, “I would like to get a good grade,” your goal can be, “I would like to improve my grade this term.” Your goal statement should answer all of the questions: who, what, when, where, and why.

  • Measurable: If your goal is measurable, you should be able to keep track of your progress at any point along the way. “I would like to get a B this term.

  • Achievable: Working toward your goal should lead to satisfaction, which will  motivate you to push yourself even harder. Set goals that are challenging but you know you can achieve. For example if you want to achieve B grade, are you capable? Do you have the necessary resources to enable you achieve the goals?

  • Relevant: It’s important that your goals matter to you or else you will be quick to abandon them after hitting an obstacle after a while. If your goal is relevant, it should be worth your time and effort. Also, be rewarding. For example, getting a B grade will help you get the course of your choice.

  • Time-Bound: Your SMART goals need a deadline so you stay focused and determined. With a sense of urgency, you will know what you can do today, next week, and next month to make progress toward achieving your goal.
