Surviving campus part 1

Thursday, 30th Sep 2021

First things first, Congratulations on joining Campus. Its not an easy fit but here you are.

You are now in a new territory. You ought to navigate to the end, carefully. You might take a wrong turn here and there, but you’ll get to the end eventually. You have to.

It’s not easy going through Campus, a place where freedom is limitless. A place where people from different backgrounds and upbringing meet and interact.

After experiencing the culture shock that accompanies you on your first day in Campus, you will come face to face with some real life challenges that you are not prepared for. You may think you are but you truly aren’t. In reality, no one is ever prepared for Campus. Here are a few things tried and tested tips on how to cope throughout your time in Campus.

Before anything else, you are a student. You are in Campus to learn, maintain good grades and get that degree or diploma. Purpose to attend all your classes. Unlike in high-school, no one in Campus will tell you to go to class. Master some self discipline and push yourself to have a clean attendance sheet. This will come in handy especially during exams and graduation. And also, what could be more important than your classes?

Be sure to interact with your lecturers, especially in class. The more active you are, the better you retain what has been taught in class.

Your lecturers also contribute a great deal towards your graduation. Keep this in mind before you back talk or choose to become smart when dealing with them. They are human. They are parents too. Cut them some slack sometimes. And be kind, it doesn’t cost much to be respectful to your lecturers.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in while in high-school? You should look for them in Campus and join. Or maybe explore new clubs and activities. Campus is all about finding yourself, and networking. Lifelong friendships, relationships and business-ships are formed in Campus.

By participating in clubs and activities, you not only get to meet new and amazing(sometimes not so much) people. And you get paid too. Yes, most sports and clubs pay you. If you play basketball and go for tournaments, you get paid a stipend. It’s not much, but in Campus, it’s more than enough.

If you have a hobby or talent that you can monetize, I suggest you get to that as soon as you join Campus. If you are able to set up a small side business while you go about your studies, please do that. It’s tough out here.  Most people say the most broke times of their lives was when they were in Campus. At one point, the little you get from your parents is simply not enough for the budget you have.

This is where your little side hustle pays off, it supplements the pocket money. This way, you are able to enjoy the entire Campus experience without hurting your parents pockets. Of course not everyone needs the extra money, but it does come through.

Additionally, it builds independence and discipline. Just don’t forget that you are a student first before anything else.

Do not do a course that you do not want to. Don’t do a course because your parents want you to, or because that is what is expected of you. Most universities allow you to change your course in your first year. Choose something that you are passionate about and will actually enjoy. Campus doesn’t have to be torturous and full of what ifs. It’s supposed to be a fun experience. If you are conflicted about what course to choose that would suit you and your interests, reach out to us for guidance.

All in all, Campus is not a terrible place. Its definitely a wild experience, but I believe this article coupled with our website will help you cope well enough. Don’t forget to have a little fun as you get by.
